Latest Traveler Review: We felt a little misled by guidebooks which had Blues Alley on their "Best Of" lists. On the multiple recommendations of travel books, we had dinner here and caught the 8 pm jazz show one weeknight.
The menu is generally New Orleans/Cajun food. Not bad, but not the quality you want if you're having a nice evening out in one of the nation's Great Cities.
The bill was a little surprising. Drinks were quite high-priced, even the soft drinks (no free refills, either). I expect a little mark-up at places like this, but we were taken aback. There was also a mysterious "service fee" which we knew about beforehand, but after being there it seemed unjustified (they didn't issue "tickets" for the show or anything like that). We also had server problems; at one time we did not see our waitress for 20 minutes, and had to go to the bar to order our own drinks. Since we were only one of five occupied tables for dinner, there seemed little reason for the neglect.
We ended up sorry we'd spent an evening here. We would have had a much better time if we'd had a nice (or even a so-so) dinner elswhere. Have dinner somewhere else, then come enjoy the jazz.
