Latest Traveler Review: Two Quail serves American cuisine in an American setting in what can only be called THE American city: Washington, D.C. The restaurant (open for lunch and dinner except Sundays, when it opens for dinner at 5 P.M.)is housed in a row house near the railroad station, and sandwiched between 2 other restaurants (each in a row house). The decor is cozy, cute Victorian. Tables are set (typically for two) in nooks and crannies within the house. The walls are covered with paintings of no special merit, and the tables are intentionally set with mismatched silverware. I believe the effect is "shabby-chic." The wine list is excellent; the menu, as of Dec. 4, ranged from quail to fish to vegetarian. Prices were around $8 for appetizers, to $26 for entrees. Obviously, everything was a la carte. Breads ranged from olive, rosemary to raisin-nut. Beer offered was bottled Ying-ling (among the oldest brewries in the US, and very good). We had the signature dish: two quail stuffed with pumpkin, then glazed with walnut and apricot, and brown trout topped with spinach and cheese. I felt the quail were undercooked, but the trout was divinely poached. We had no room for dessert, but the menu seemed enticing (pies, cakes, tortes, etc.)Service was friendly, not overbearing, and unrushed. We spent approximately 2.5 hours at dinner. Price for two was $100 plus tip. It seemed in-line with other "trendy" restaurants in D.C. My husband gave it an "a." I was somewhat less impressed.
