Latest Traveler Review: I recently had dinner with my fiance and a close family friend at La Fourchette. Our family friend has been to the restaurant many times and made the suggestion- it was a great one. Ambiance- Simple, unpretentious, almost Bohemian. Comfortable chairs, murals on the wall, very relaxed. Food- Appetizers-We started with some fresh crudite with a garlic aoli- simple yet incredible. We each had different appetizers. I had the Pate de Maison (pork pate). This was creamy, rich and elegant. It was served with cornichon and was delicious with the sliced baggette on the table. Our friend had smoked salmon which was what you'd expect. My Fiance had the onion soup which was probably the finest example of French Onion soup that either of us had ever had. The notable thing about each of the appetizers was the care in which everything was prepared- the forcemeats (i.e. pate) and the soup showed a careful attention to detail that made for an excellent product. Entrees-Seafood vol-au-vent- A vol-au-vent is a puff pastry shell, in the form of a cooking pot, containing a mixture of foods in a cream sauce. In this case the food was shrimp, scallops and fish in a luscious cream sauce with vegetables. The scallops were succulent and perfectly cooked and the shrimp was amazing. Cassoulet: I ordered this classic French dish of white beans, slowly cooked with an assortment of meats--such as sausage, pork, and duck or goose confit. My cassoulet had sausage, chicken, ham and duck confit and was euphoric in taste and quality of ingredients. It was the ultimate comfort food and I've never had better.Ostrich Steak au poivre- My fiance had the ostrich for the first time and it too was exceptional. If you have never had ostrich, it is very much like a tender steak, almost like beef cheeks or a skirt steak in consistency and tenderness. The taste is only slightly gamy, i would say somewhere closer to beef than to venison. The ostrich was cooked to medium and was just wonderful. Wine List- I would comment on the list but I did not do the ordering. I can only speak to the lovely Pinot Noir that we had that was perfect with the meal- it is tough to find a Pinot with a backbone and this had it. All in all, dinner was incredible and I will be coming back very soon.
