Lyon, Rhone-Alpes Travel Guide

Rhône-Alpes is one of the 26 regions of France and it is located on the eastern border of the country towards the south. And the name of region was called after the Rhône River and Alps mountain range. Lyon- its capital is the second-largest metropolitan area France after Paris. The city is also one dynamic economic area in Europe with ranking 6th European economic region.  The city is a prosperous region, its economy second in size only Ile-de-France in France. This can be attributed to diversity of the production in different sectors especially in industry and services.

Rhône-Alpes contains 3 major cities in France and it forms the triangle Lyon- Grenoble- Saint- Etienne which is the economic core of the area.  And these three urban areas are very complementary and have smaller cities around like satellites. In the city, the official language is French although Franco-Provencal was widely spoken in the whole region 50 years ago. In this area, there are large immigrant populations from other countries such as Poland, Italy, Portugal and North Africa.

Rhône-Alpes is a major European transit hub, linking from France and Europe to the Mediterranean area. There are a lot of means of transportation to travel here. Millions travel its motorways in summertime from Paris to holidays at the sea. In particular, there are a lot of international airports as well as many other minor airports and airfields. In addition, some popular kinds of means of transport here include buses, trains, taxi, buses and many more.

For several centuries Lyon, capital of Rhône-Alpes, has been known as the French capital of gastronomy, due, in part, to the presence of many of France's finest chefs in the city and its surroundings. In addition, Lyon is the home of very typical and traditional restaurants: the bouchons which are usually convivial restaurants serving local dishes, and local wines. Lyon is famous for its morning snacks, the mâchons, made up of local charcuterie and usually accompanied by Beaujolais red wine. Wines are also interesting in this region such as the very famous Beaujolais, Cotes du Rhone and Savoy wine.

Travelers can enjoy great food as well as discover many beauty spot especially there are six main lakes in Rhône-Alpes such as Lac de Paladru, Lac d'Aiguebelette, Lac du Bourget, Lac d'Annecy, Lac de Nantua, Lac Léman . And there are a lot of other beauty museums and great places when visiting here.
